RICHMOND—A priest at St. Brendan’s in Richmond, Virginia offered Masses an hour late, forgetting that it is now Daylight Saving Time. Father Paul Canis, 94, reportedly stumbled into the 8am Mass around 9:02am.
“He’s a little old, but man, no one thought to tell him?” remarked one parishioner.
Daniel Todd, a life-long parishioner told The Roman Caller that fifteen minutes into the regular Mass time “people started leaving. I and a handful of others decided just to make a holy hour.”
Sure enough, Canis rang the bell at 9:03 to no music and a mostly-empty church.
“That didn’t stop him,” said one of the parishioners in attendance. “Music or no music, people or no people, he acted like there was nothing unusual or off about the situation. Fr. Paul just goes through it like it’s nothing.”
Sure enough, the priest was finished with Mass in 30 minutes and back in the sacristy preparing for his next Mass, which was supposed to be at 10am.
“Who is the sacristan here? Does no one tell him that it’s time to start?”
At press time, it’s 10:51 and the priest has still not come out to celebrate the 10am Mass.
