US Bishops Decry “Egregious” Trump Post, but admit “It was kinda funny though”

U.S. — The United States Conference for Catholic Bishops (USCCB) has decried a now-deleted post by President Donald Trump for allegedly racist subtexts, while still admitting that the post still got a few laughs. “I am glad to see that the egregious post has been taken down,” wrote Bishop Daniel Garcia, Chairman of the USCCB Subcommittee for the Promotion of Racial Justice and Reconciliation, “but even I have to admit that the video was pretty funny.”

The post, which is now deleted, featured depictions of several democratic politicians as Sub-Saharan animals, while The Token’s “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” played in the background. One scene featured former-president Barack Obama and the former-first lady Michelle Obama as chimpanzees, which evoked criticisms that the meme demonstrated racial prejudice.

Still, the controversial post generated a few laughs, even from some of President Trump’s fiercest critics in the US episcopacy. Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago released a statement on Monday decrying the meme and kicking himself for laughing at some of the images. “A few days ago, we saw that in the White House such blatant racism is not merely a practice of the past,” said Cupich in a statement. “Portraying human beings as animals – less than human – is not new.” Cupich l continued saying, “Still, I got pretty good chuckle at seeing Hakeem Jeffries depicted as a lemur! I mean, remember Timon in The Lion King?! Hahaha. I shouldn’t laugh, but man, that was funny.”

Neither the cardinal nor the bishop could be reached for comment.
